Also beloved ones would receive gifts of precious metals, jewelry and even herds of animals.Ancient Rome had gift giving at the beginning of winter traces. To honor Saturn, their harvest god and Mithras, the god of light. The Romans held year end celebrations. The people prepared special foods, joined in gift giving and singing and decorated their homes with greenery. This custom became part of gift giving.Human beings have been giving gifts since ancient times. Historians believe that this is how the bartering system was started. Land that was passed from one generation to an other was considered a gift.Jesus Christ, at the time of his birth, was associated with gift giving. The three wise men brought three gifts to Baby Jesus to honor him. The first gift was gold, a gift for a King. The second gift was incense, a gift for a priest and the third gift was myrrh, a burial ointment for one who would die. The idea of giving gifts to newborns could have started with this bible story.Today, we give gifts for so many reasons. We give gifts for birthdays, holidays, farewells, thank yours to welcome someone or just because they are special.We sometimes give gifts to people that we really do not know that well, but we fell obligated to do so.
