| Every day we use Internet services and search tools in particular when seeking information. The search results are normally provided in the form of a list and are normally called hits. The information may comprise web pages, images, information and other types of files. Some search tools also collect data available in databases or open directories. If compared with Internet directories that are maintained by human editors, search engines work automatically or are a mixture of algorithmic and human input. Web search tools function by storing information about many web pages which they retrieve from the INTERNET. These pages are retrieved by a web crawler, also known as a spider. It is an automated Web browser which follows every link it discovers. The content of each page is then analyzed to determine how to index it. Words, for instance, are extracted from titles, headings or special fields called meta tags. Data about web pages are stored in an index database for further use in queries. Some search tools, such as Google, store the whole or part of the source page (known as a cache) and information about web pages, while others, such as AltaVista, store every word of every page they have discovered. The cached page always contains the initial search text, since it is the one that was actually indexed. Hence, it can be very useful because it includes data that may no longer be found anywhere else on the Web.When a user types search terms in the search field, the engine looks through its index and displays a list of best-matching web pages according to its parameters, usually with a brief summary containing the document's title and at times excerpts from the text. Some search tools offer an advanced feature called proximity search that allows users to define the length between search terms. The relevancy of the result set determines the usefulness of a search engine. Since there may be millions of web pages containing a particular word or phrase, some pages may be more relevant and popular than others. The results can be ranked to display the "best" ones first. The way a search software programme displays web pages is specific to a search engine. The techniques also alter in time, as the use of Internet services alters and advanced techniques emerge. |
